The oil-and-gas producer and Italy’s largest refiner reported a decline in production for 2013 as well as a weaker adjusted profit from the prior year’s levels. 

Challenges are mostly expected to persist this year. In late April, Eni projected that retail sales of refined products in Italy and the rest of Europe would decline 

slightly between 2013 and 2014. It expects natural gas sales to be lower, and predicts that excess supplies and overcapacity will weigh on margins for energy 

commodities.

The American automaker generated headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2014 by announcing more than 50 separate recalls affecting nearly 29 million vehicles. The recalls put the company’s recently installed chief executive, Mary Barra, in the hot seat, forcing her to testify in front of Congress twice about an ignition switch problem that is linked to at least 13 deaths. Before the recalls, GM was performing exceptionally well: vehicle sales climbed in many key markets in 2013, including in the U.S., South America and Asia-Pacific.

After its revenue dipped in 2012, Russian energy giant Gazprom started to climb back up the Global 500 with a 7.5% sales increase last year.

The world’s largest natural gas producer has been front and center in the ongoing political tensions between Russia and the Ukraine, as the state-controlled firm cut 

off the latter’s gas supply over alleged unpaid bills. As Ukraine and Gazprom go to court over the matter, the Russian company could stand to lose almost 3 billion in 

earnings by 2016 should the Ukraine reach a deal to get its gas elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Gazprom is looking to reduce its reliance on Europe for revenues after signing a landmark, 30-year, 400 billion deal to supply China with natural gas.
